History

Bushmead Church was established in April 1992. The Church was a vision of the then vicar of St Thomas’ Church Stopsley, the Canon Francis Estdale. Historically the Bushmead area was a distant rural part of his parish. As the housing estate began to develop Canon Estdale pursued the acquisition of an area of land and the appointment of a Minister for the Bushmead Community. The first houses were built in 1984 with over 1000 new houses now having been completed . Church House, sited across the road from the Church plot was purchased as our Ministers residence. Mark Slater was the first minister who began working here in 1992.

In March 1993, Bushmead Conventional District was created to serve the 2,600 homes in the area with a view to a new church building being erected. The Church owns a site of land next to the community centre and the diocese have set aside £250,000 towards the cost of the building.

Since its inception the Church has almost exclusively worshipped at the Luton Borough Council run Bushmead Community Centre where we have been made very welcome. Our church emphasis is on being part of the community and so it seemed appropriate to hold services at the Centre.

Mark Slater moved to a new appointment in 1999 and Simon Dust was appointed as the new minister in May 2000.

The church decided in July 2000 that now was the right time to seek to build a building on the land owned by the church, next to the community centre.

The New Church

Christchurch was opened on 24th January 2003 by the Bishop of St Albans. The church will be open every day providing a wonderful new resource for Bushmead.

In addition to a midweek communion service, a prayer room will always be available for personal reflection and counselling if required. With a monthly lunch club for senior citizens who would value a meal and a chance to meet other people, and a daily coffee bar for everyone to meet, chat and enjoy good coffee with friends.

Christchurch will provide a warm and friendly place for the community to get together.
